This day is a chance to recognize global efforts toward a polio-free world, commemorate people on the frontlines in the fight to eradicate polio from every corner of the globe, and increase awareness about polio immunization. Poliomyelitis, usually known as polio, is a life-threatening viral disease that only affects humans and spreads through contaminated food and water. Although there is no cure, there are safe and effective vaccines available. Polio can be avoided by getting vaccinated. When a child receives multiple doses of the polio vaccine, he or she is virtually always protected for the rest of their lives. As a result, the polio eradication approach relies on immunizing every child to avoid infection.
