African Traditional Medicine Day has been observed over the years to raise awareness of the vital role that the wide variety of medicinal plants and herbs play in enhancing health. Traditional medicine has served as many countries' primary source of healthcare over the years since it is dependable, economical, and easily available. The pandemic has also raised awareness of the benefits of medicinal plants and herbs as it encouraged a greater study on the topic by numerous research groups in a quest to find a cure. However, more effort is still required to incorporate traditional medicine into contemporary healthcare systems.
On this day, lawmakers, leaders and research institutions are urged to increase cooperation in the area of traditional medicine research and production to provide access to secure, well-researched, and effective traditional medicines that can enhance health and save lives. Additionally, this helps identify toxic herbal medicines and discourages their use.
