If medications are improperly stored, prescribed, dispensed, administered, or inadequately monitored, they can cause major harm, disabilities, and even death. However, everyone will eventually need to take medication to either treat or prevent illness. This is the reason for the immediate call to action to increase medication safety and raise awareness of the significant burden of medication-induced harm worldwide. All parties need to work together to create strategies for preventing medication errors and minimising drug-related harm, especially in high-risk situations including change of care provider, the use of several drugs at once (seen in chronic diseases), and the use of medications that look-alike or sound-alike.
The goal is to raise public awareness and involvement, improve understanding of drug concepts,
improve patient safety and lessen patient harm. This can be accomplished by enabling patients and their families to actively participate in their care and use of medication. To reach our goal of harm-free medication, be sure to know what drug you're taking, check the time and date, and if in question, get clarification from your doctor.
