WORLD STROKE DAY

𝗪𝗢𝗥𝗟𝗗 𝗦𝗧𝗥𝗢𝗞𝗘 𝗗𝗔𝗬 𝟸𝟿𝚃𝙷 𝙾𝙲𝚃𝙾𝙱𝙴𝚁 🅃🄷🄴🄼🄴: 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲 #𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 On World Stroke Day, we discuss strategies to lessen the burden of stroke by increasing public knowledge of the risk factors, symptoms and complications of a stroke. It is also a chance to push for regional, national and international decision-makers to take the necessary steps to enhance stroke prevention, access to immediate, long-term post-stroke care, and support for survivors and caregivers.  When your brain's blood supply is interrupted, it can lead to a stroke, which damages your brain cells either permanently or temporarily. After a stroke, the affected person may recover completely, but those who do not recover fully experience one or more disabilities while in the worst situation, a stroke can lead to death. Stroke is a leading cause of disability which can be prevented. We can lessen our risk of developing various illnesses that can cause a stroke by exercising frequen

WORLD POLIO DAY

𝗪𝗢𝗥𝗟𝗗 𝗣𝗢𝗟𝗜𝗢 𝗗𝗔𝗬 𝟸𝟺𝚃𝙷 𝙾𝙲𝚃𝙾𝙱𝙴𝚁 🅃🄷🄴🄼🄴: 𝗔 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗲𝗿 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗠𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗻 This day promotes polio awareness and recognises international efforts to eradicate the disease. It also honours the noble sacrifices made by individuals who have spent decades striving to eradicate polio from every nation and build a better future for mothers and children.  The poliovirus, which causes poliomyelitis, is a dangerous virus that spreads quickly. When someone contracts the virus, it can spread across the globe. Children under the age of five are most at risk. Considering that the virus is found in the faeces and saliva of infected people, coming into direct contact with an infected person's secretions, can promote its spread. Food, water, or hands contaminated with infected faeces are the main sources of transmission. Most of the time, it does not cause any symptoms, although some people may have a fever, headache and abdomi

Natural disasters, man-made disasters, violence, conflict, and a variety of accidents, with road crashes being the most frequent cause, can all result in trauma.  The goal of World Trauma Day is to lessen trauma-related incidents' negative impacts, such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, as well as injuries and deaths. This year, the emphasis is on raising awareness of trauma and instructing the public on how to deal with traumatic events. Oftentimes, traumatic injuries occur suddenly and require urgent medical attention. Some might even need life-saving interventions. After sustaining a traumatic injury, a lot of survivors experience disabilities. Others suffer devastating injuries that result in death. The patients have a better chance of recovery the sooner they

WORLD SPINE DAY

𝗪𝗢𝗥𝗟𝗗 𝗦𝗣𝗜𝗡𝗘 𝗗𝗔𝗬 𝟷𝟼𝚃𝙷 𝙾𝙲𝚃𝙾𝙱𝙴𝚁 🅃🄷🄴🄼🄴: 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗦𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝘀 The day is observed by medical professionals, public health advocates, exercise specialists, and rehabilitation specialists as back pain incidence and related disability are on the rise globally. This year's theme emphasises spine pain and impairment as a component of the global disease burden, acknowledges the need for access to high-quality, indispensable spinal health services globally, and preventive actions. In under-served neighbourhoods, there is a lack of access to high-quality spine care and rehabilitation, which can lead to irreversible deformity and the inability to work and support one's self and family.  While efforts are made to increase the afflicted population's access to spine care, we should focus on preventing spine-related disorders and enhancing spine health by putting in place some measures, such as:  -Avoid sedentary lifestyle which can result in decr

WORLD FOOD DAY

𝗪𝗢𝗥𝗟𝗗 𝗙𝗢𝗢𝗗 𝗗𝗔𝗬 𝟷𝟼𝚃𝙷 𝙾𝙲𝚃𝙾𝙱𝙴𝚁 🅃🄷🄴🄼🄴: 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗡𝗼𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗕𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗱 Everyone has the right to healthy, nourishing food because it is essential for survival. Global warming, natural disasters, war, interstate disputes, and rising costs are just a few of the many elements that affect food security worldwide. Better productivity, better nourishment, a better environment, and a better life are all promoted on this day. We can achieve this by transforming the agricultural industry. Governments, stakeholders, and others must work cooperatively to emphasise everyone's equal right to food and nourishment. Indeed, we should all strive for a more equitable and sustainable future while acting with more compassion and empathy in ways that have an impact on how food is produced, stored, and consumed. Everybody, everywhere should have regular access to sufficient quantities of nutrient-rich food. Everyone should be included. Photo credit: Food Security Cluster

INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR DISASTER RISK REDUCTION (IDDRR)

An effort is being made to improve public access to information about disaster risks and early warnings for hazards. The main objective is to lessen current risks and prevent the emergence of new risks. Early warning systems and readiness, however, can enable quick action to reduce the devastation to people, property, and livelihoods when risk reduction is not possible. An early warning system must make sure that the populations that are at risk can receive the alert, comprehend it, and most importantly, act on it. It is not enough for the system to accurately identify an approachi

ROAD TO MASTERS IN THE US

jhsph.edu  ROAD TO MASTERS PROGRAM IN THE US   The first thing is deciding where you want to further your education. For me, I believe the United States stands out for various reasons   1.  Their institutions/universities are among the best in the world 2.  Unlike institutions in the UK, you do not have to pay tuition upfront. In  fact  in my case, I had come to the US, started my program and was way into my program before payment was required to register for courses for next term. I only paid acceptance fee back in Nigeria. 3.  There are scholarships available in most institutions, but they are quite competitive. Do due diligence and research on the institutions you are applying to. This is a link of available scholarships in some institutions.  4.  In lieu of scholarships there are loans available which do not require a co-signer/guarantor  like  Prodigy finance  and  Mpower     Depending on when you are making this decision , I would start from the beginning, so you can pick up f

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE GIRL-CHILD (IDG)

𝗜𝗡𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗡𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗔𝗟 𝗗𝗔𝗬 𝗢𝗙 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗚𝗜𝗥𝗟-𝗖𝗛𝗜𝗟𝗗 (𝗜𝗗𝗚) 𝟷𝟷𝚃𝙷 𝙾𝙲𝚃𝙾𝙱𝙴𝚁 🅃🄷🄴🄼🄴: 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗜𝘀 𝗡𝗼𝘄 - 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗥𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀, 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 The 10th anniversary of the IDG is today with the focus on securing the rights and future of the girl child. Investing in girls' rights is still insufficient, and girls continue to face a wide range of obstacles to reaching their full potential. This is true even though policymakers and the general public are paying more attention to issues that affect girls than in the past and there are more opportunities for girls to speak out globally.  The purpose of this day is to recognise the value, strength, and potential of young women by promoting the creation of greater opportunities for them. The goal of this day is to reduce gender-based problems that young girls encounter worldwide, such as underage marriages, inadequate educational opportunities, violence, and injustice amongst others. As a result, the

In order to do this, we must remove the stigma and discrimination associated with mental illnesses and encourage people to seek help. We must improve mental health services so that a network of domestically located, easily accessible, cost effective, and high-quality services can meet the whole range of mental health needs. This is an opportunity for everyone to work together to advance this cause and speak up about what needs to be done to make everyone
