The International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction provides a chance to recognise the achievements being made in disaster risk reduction and prevention, as well as the resulting losses in human life, fundamental infrastructure and financial impact. An effort is being made to improve public access to information about disaster risks and early warnings for hazards. The main objective is to lessen current risks and prevent the emergence of new risks. Early warning systems and readiness, however, can enable quick action to reduce the devastation to people, property, and livelihoods when risk reduction is not possible.
An early warning system must make sure that the populations that are at risk can receive the alert, comprehend it, and most importantly, act on it. It is not enough for the system to accurately identify an approaching hazard alone. Therefore, an alert system must result in an early response, which may involve fleeing the area and finding a suitable place to stay.
Today, we honour how people all over the world are lowering their risk of being affected by catastrophes and increasing awareness of disaster risk reduction.
