Female genital mutilation (FGM) refers to all procedures performed on female genitalia for non-medical purposes. The goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, particularly those that pertain to women and young children, were considered towards establishing this day. The aim is to raise awareness of genital mutilation in girls and to inform people of its negative effects. Female genital mutilation, which has its roots in gender inequity, reduces the chances for women and girls to exercise their rights and reach their full potential. It is recognized on a global scale as a major human rights violation that endangers the health and integrity of girls and women worldwide.
More educated and open to change than ever before, men and boys today are more likely to be against female genital mutilation and gender inequality. Therefore, partnering with them ensures that families, communities, and policy-makers support and invest in girls to promote the elimination of female genital mutilation while maintaining the focus on women and girls.
Additionally, this day offers everyone the chance to get involved, increase awareness, and emphasize that female genital mutilation is an unacceptable, harmful practice that violates the fundamental human rights of women and girls. We join the United Nations Population Fund and United Nations Children's Fund (UNFPA-UNICEF) Joint Programme, which calls on everyone to work together with men and boys and encourage their participation to hasten the abolition of this destructive practice and strengthen the voices of women and girls.
